Our Cuisine

At YARA, Japanese precision meets the warmth and generosity of the Mediterranean — brought together at one table, at the heart of Puerto Portals marina.

The Concept

Two culinary cultures — one identity

YARA restaurant dining room with marina views

"Two of the world's great culinary cultures, reinterpreted as one seamless experience."

YARA's cuisine is not a fusion in the conventional sense, but a distinct culinary identity. It combines the discipline and refinement of Japan — precision cutting, respect for ingredients, the depth of umami, and the art of binchotan charcoal grilling — with the vibrancy of the Mediterranean: exceptional local produce, bold flavours, and a culture of sharing.

Chef Simon Petutschnig, Austrian-born with a career spanning Europe and Japan, shapes this philosophy into a cuisine that feels both refined and effortless — rooted in technique, yet expressive and generous.

Three Kitchens — One Dialogue

Three expressions of the same philosophy

Every table at YARA has access to three distinct culinary expressions, each offering a different perspective on the Japanese-Mediterranean philosophy.

01

Main Kitchen

The heart of YARA. Dishes such as Wagyu carpaccio with a Japanese touch, salmon tataki with mango and passion fruit, or bluefin tuna tartare. Here, precision meets creativity — refined, expressive, and unmistakably YARA.

02

Sushi Counter

A dedicated sushi experience, where premium ingredients are prepared à la minute by specialist chefs. Bluefin tuna, sea bass, nigiri and sashimi — combining Japanese craftsmanship with the instinct for exceptional Mediterranean sourcing.

03

Robata Grill

At the centre of the restaurant: the Japanese binchotan charcoal grill. The robata brings depth, intensity and purity of flavour — from miso-glazed sea bass to Wagyu and Miyazaki A5 beef. Fire, simplicity and precision in perfect balance.

From Iberian Wagyu Mudejar to the renowned Japanese Miyazaki A5 — exceptional beef, served across different preparations, always highlighting its purity and texture.

Sharing at YARA

A table in motion

Dining at YARA is centred around sharing — a fluid experience where the table evolves naturally with each dish.

Guests are invited to combine selections across our three kitchens, creating a dynamic interplay of flavours, textures and temperatures. Dishes are placed at the centre, encouraging interaction and discovery.

A typical flow might begin with lighter plates — sashimi, tartares or signature rolls — followed by warm starters and robata-grilled fish, meats or vegetables, enjoyed together at the table.

Our knowledgeable team guides the experience, helping to shape a balanced selection — often complemented by a glass of champagne or wine, naturally accompanying the rhythm of the evening.

Wine & Champagne

An integral part
of the experience

At YARA, the wine and champagne selection is not an addition to the cuisine — it is an integral part of the experience. Our cellar brings together a carefully curated collection of international wines alongside a strong focus on Mallorca's most expressive producers. From elegant whites to structured reds, the selection is designed to complement the Japanese-Mediterranean cuisine in depth and balance.

This philosophy is guided by our Head Sommelier, a Master of Wine (USA) — one of the highest and rarest distinctions in the global wine world — ensuring a level of expertise and curation that defines the YARA experience.

Champagne

Champagne holds a natural place within the YARA experience — not reserved for special occasions, but enjoyed as part of the rhythm of the table. A particular highlight is our champagne by-the-glass offering, allowing guests to enjoy exceptional cuvées with ease and flexibility throughout the evening. Alongside champagne, a considered selection of cava and sparkling wines rounds out the offering.

The Bar

Cocktails & the Art of the Drink

At YARA, the bar is as considered as the kitchen. Our bartenders craft each cocktail with the same precision and philosophy that defines the cuisine — Japanese-inspired techniques, Mediterranean ingredients and an instinct for balance. From a perfectly stirred Old Fashioned to our signature Vermouth Spritz with Mallorcan dry vermouth, every drink is designed to complement the meal and the moment. The marble bar, the low light and the view of the marina make YARA one of the finest places to drink in Puerto Portals — before dinner, after, or simply on its own terms.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

What is Japanese-Mediterranean cuisine?

Japanese-Mediterranean cuisine combines the precision and ingredient philosophy of Japanese cooking — knife technique, umami, charcoal grilling — with the flavours, produce and warmth of the Mediterranean. At YARA, this fusion is expressed through three formats: the Main Kitchen, the Sushi Counter and the Robata Grill.

Is there a robata grill restaurant in Mallorca?

YARA is the only restaurant in Puerto Portals with a Japanese binchotan charcoal robata grill. Reaching temperatures far beyond conventional grilling, it imparts a refined, clean smokiness to every ingredient — from seasonal vegetables to local sea bass, culminating in the richness of Wagyu Miyazaki A5.

Does YARA serve live lobster (bogavante)?

Yes. YARA is one of the very few restaurants in Mallorca to serve fresh, live bogavante (lobster), sourced directly and prepared to order. It can be grilled on the robata or served as a centrepiece dish for the table.

What is Nava Private Dining at Puerto Portals?

Directly above YARA, Nava Private Dining hosts a series of exclusive events with internationally acclaimed visiting chefs, cooking for no more than 12 guests. The same culinary vision defines the kitchen at YARA. Chef Simon Petutschnig also leads Fera Palma, one of Mallorca's most celebrated fine dining restaurants.
